The firebird is actually modeled after a pheasant in a Chinese painting, but with the rich red and all gold coloring, he just looked more like a firebird rising from the ashes to me! The phoenix is painted in solid color fields of gold, and I just let the red come through in between the gold instead of drawing outlines on the bird, to keep him as "flaming" as possible.
