An intricate knotted cross from the Book of Kells, with a few added touches in the design, as well as some faux gold leaf of course! You can never have enough gold leaf in my opinion! ;-) On this piece I painted the background of the wooden panel a pale cream color as the larger wooden panels have a darker surface than the wee 6x6 ones and I wanted a really pale cream color behind the violets of the cross. This is an exploration into opaque technique for me, as I usually work in transparent glazes and colors. So to try out some ideas I sketched up a small series of designs that I could paint onto these nifty wooden panels I found at my local art store. These are still using acrylic, which I'm very comfortable using, but now that I've worked out some of my ideas using opaque color I want to try using a little gouache (like an opaque watercolor) on some larger pieces!
