Egg tempera is made from the yolk of an egg and pure pigment, and dries to a hard glossy finish. The gold and jewel colors in this piece with the gloss finish gives it almost an enameled appearance. The pigments here are the same as what the Celtic monks used, giving you an idea of how bright the Book of Kells must have been originally.
