But eventually we had to head out again. We caught a boat to Krong Koh Kong and from there crossed the border, and headed by mini van taxi to Trat in Bangkok, where we spent the night at Pop's Guesthouse #3. Not the cream of the crop so far as hotels go, but it was clean and we were pretty tired from being on the road. The next day we headed off again to Bangkok, and arrived 2 days early before our flight out. We stayed at the same hotel as before, because the Krit Thai Mansion was just a great location and close to the Thompson House and the MBK. Because I didn't want to drag around a bunch of souvenirs, I wanted to do a little shopping before we left.
The Thompson House was really neat. It's sort of a museum/home of a famous character in Thai history, an American soldier named Jim Thompson who moved there and decide to promote Thai culture by jump starting the Thai silk export industry, and collecting Thai artifacts and paintings and even houses! His house was a collection of 7 traditional Thai homes all fitted together to become his home. It was really neat, although they hustle you along on the tour pretty fast. After the tour you can go through the gift shop, which had some lovely (but expensive) Thai silk things, from clothing to purses! A good place to drop some bucks as the things were really well made and in quite nice color combinations. But a little too rich for my blood at $30 US etc, considering I knew I could get silk at the MBK for only a buck or two. ;-)
At the MBK the next day I grabbed 3 little tops, all embroidered, a silk skirt in shades of gold and bronze, and a linen blouse. I also got a few little silver elephants for my nieces who are Cambodian, and some other little treats for them as well. The next morning we packed everything up for the plane ride home (thank goodness silk packs up so small!), and started the long long flight back to Canada. Again, crazy long plane ride, but I zonked out and slept for most of it, thank goodness. ;-) I was really happy to see my husband, after being apart for over 3 weeks, so that was the best thing about getting back! And my dad and I had fun sending a copy of our photos back and forth to each other too.
Overall the trip was an amazing experience, and the people were all very nice and friendly. The constant begging and hustling for tuk-tuks and motos and so on got tiring, but I'd have to say that was really my only complaint (if you can call it that) about the trip. Even then it's not a complaint really, it was just tiring. But the people were great, so friendly in bahth Thailand and Cambodia, and of course the scenery and flowers and fresh pineapples were great. It was a fine time, and I'm very grateful to my dad for taking me along with him on his trip this time! :-)
